A church is more than…

A church is more than just timber and stone
And freedom is a dark road when you’re walking it alone
But the future is now, and it’s time to take a stand
So the lost bells of freedom can ring out in my land

A church is burning
The flames rise higher
Like hands that are praying
They glow in the sky
Like hands that are praying
The fire ascends
You can burn down my churches
But I shall be free
(From Simon & Garfunkel’s “A Church is Burning“)

Just as you said, the church is more than a building. They can burn the building all they want, but if the foundation of the people of the church is strong, nothing can bring it down.

A church is more than a building, but people tend to regard the building as their church:not the people. When they go to church, they go to their timber and stone building of choice. For that is where God resides. That is true, but God is also alive in the entire world, not just in buildings. We need not enter a building to enter the presence of God. And walking out the doors of that building will not make you disappear from his sight.

“Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast.” (Psalm 139:7-10, NRSV)

Perhaps we would seek and know the presence of God more if we didn’t have all these timber and stone buildings holding us back, tainting our perception of what the church is and who God is.
